Understanding

Este es el segundo año que tengo la oportunidad de comprobar lo orgullosos que son los islandeses en cuanto a su cultura, su país, sus costumbres, su forma de vida. Es una sociedad moderna y tolerante, pero a la vez cercana y abierta, nada fria como se podría esperar de un país nordico. Un país que se siente orgulloso de tener de nuevo una mujer como primer ministro, la cual además es la primera mujer gay en obstentar dicho cargo.

Todo esto se puede ver reflejado en la fiesta que como en otros muchos paises los gays de Islandia celebran para manifestar su orgullo, unque en este distante país, se celebre de otra forma. Es cuanto menos curioso comprobar como las extravagantes carrozas llenas de musculados gays casi desnudos que encontramos en otros paises, son suplidas aquí por familias de difrentes composiciones, bandas de musica, mujeres en moto, y hasta curas que pasean tranquilamente por el centro de la ciudad hasta una gran plaza donde todos juntos disfrutan de un concierto con grupos musicales de lo mas variado.

Todo un acto de civismo, entendimiento y respeto mutuo.

This is the second year that I have an opportunity to see how proud Icelanders are of their culture, country, habits and lifestyle. This is a modern and tolerant society which is at the same time accomodating and open-minded. And it is definitely not unfriendly as one would expect it to be in a Nordic country. Iceland is a country proud of having a woman as Prime minister; she is furthermore the first lesbian to reach this position. All that pride can be seen during the festival in which gays and lesbians show how proud they are – the Gay Pride –, a festival that takes place in Iceland as in many other countries even if it’s celebrated in another way. It is very interesting to see the extravagant floats that in  other countries are usually filled with rugged gays are here replaced by various types of families, music bands, women on motorbikes, and even priests marching quietly around the city-centre. In the square everybody can enjoy a big concert with various bands playing …

This is all an act of civilness, mutual respect, and understanding.

A day with Awa

Awa tiene ahora 23 años, cuando tenía poco mas de veinte quedó embarazada de su tercer hijo, unos meses después decidió embarcarse en un peligroso viaje en patera de siete dias por el Atlantico, desde Senegal  hasta el sueño Europeo, las costas de Canarias. 

En los mas de dos años que lleva en Madrid a penas ha trabajado un par de meses como cajera de supermercado y la unica ayuda que recibe de los servicios sociales es el pago de la guardería de su hijo Mohamed.

Awa tiene dos niños mas en Senegal, de cuatro y siete años, a los que echa de menos pero no podrá ver hasta ayan transcurrido 3 años de su llegada, el tiempo que debe esperar en España para tramirar la reagrupación familiar.

Awa is 23 years old. She was pregnant from her third child when she was 20. A few months later she decided to follow her dream and take a boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Senegal to Europe. This dangerous trip took her 7 days before she arrived at the Canarian Islands. 

For more then 2 years she lived in Madrid. She just worked 2 months in a supermarket, the only help she got from the social services was the money to pay for the school of her kid Mohammed.

Awa has 2 more kids in Senegal. One of 4 and one of 7 years old, which she misses much. She cannot see them until she spent at least 3 years in Spain. Which is the time needed before family reunion can take place.

In the Country Side

Islandia es sin duda un pais de contrastes, desarrollo y antiguas tradiciones conviven en una isla habitada por sólo 300.000 personas, de las cuales casi 200.000 viven en el area de Reykjavik, la capital. Es fácil sentirse atraido por la modernidad de la gran ciudad, pero donde realmente se llega a conocer este pais y su cultura es en sus enormes e inabarcables campos, levemente salpicados por pequeñas villas y granjas donde en verano los tractores no paran de cortar hierba y envolverla en rollos de plastico, los cuales ayudarán a preservarla como alimento para las ovejas durante el largo invierno.

Iceland is a country full of contrasts, developing and old traditions live together in an island with just 300.000 inhabitants, out of which 200.00 live in the Reykjavik area, the capital. It´s easy to feel attracted by the modernity of the big city, but where you really get to know this country and its culture is in its endless fields, small villages and farms, where in summer the tractors are cutting grass and rolling it in plastic in order to preserve it as food for the sheep during the winter.

Hay gente que ha nacido y ha sido educada para es siempre en el mismo lugar, gente que piensa que la estabilidad es necesaria, un objetivo a conseguir.

Yo sólo busco una forma diferente de ver el mundo. Para ello miro a través de las personas, conociendo sus historias, como la de Ahmed, un marroquí de 45 años que lleva 20 años trabajando en Europa, y que para demandar su regularización  ha decidido encerrarse con otros 200 inmigrantes en una iglesia deBruselas, donde mantienen una huelga de hambre que dura ya mas de 70 dias. La mayoría de ellos han enfermado y algunos incluso han tenido que ser hospitalizados por serios problemas mentales tras el largo ayuno.

There are people who are born and educated to always stay in the same place, who think that stability is necessary,  a goal, a challenge. 

I´m  just looking for a different way to see the world.

I look through the people, knowing their stories, as  Ahmed, a  Moroccan of 45 years old who has been working in Europe the last 20 years, and to demand his regularization has decided to shut himself with an other 200 inmigrants in a Church in Brussels, where they maintain a 70 days long hunger strike.

Most of them got sick and few even had to be sent to hospital due to several mental problems.
