
This is the second year that I have an opportunity to see how proud Icelanders are of their culture, country, habits and lifestyle. This is a modern and tolerant society which is at the same time accomodating and open-minded. And it is definitely not unfriendly as one would expect it to be in a Nordic country. Iceland is a country proud of having a woman as Prime minister; she is furthermore the first lesbian to reach this position. All that pride can be seen during the festival in which gays and lesbians show how proud they are – the Gay Pride –, a festival that takes place in Iceland as in many other countries even if it’s celebrated in another way. It is very interesting to see the extravagant floats that in other countries are usually filled with rugged gays are here replaced by various types of families, music bands, women on motorbikes, and even priests marching quietly around the city-centre.
